Department of Mechatronics

Profile

The Department of Mechatronics is an integrated course of Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics. A student of Mechatronics has the added advantage of being well versed in all three departments, therefore can successfully and singlehandedly manage tasks which otherwise would have required additional manpower from various departments. We have a dedicated and well qualified team of faculty members, several of them are M-Tech in Mechatronics, Power Electronics, Digital Electronics and Communication. Our faculty members have published several papers in international journals and are regularly encouraged to attend short term trainings and conferences in various topics to ensure life-long learning capability. We have a wide range of practical laboratories in subjects such as PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers), a newly upgraded Robotics Lab, CIM (Computer Integrated Manufacturing Lab) which focuses both on software and hardware capabilities, state of the art CNC machines in the Mechanical Workshop and so on.

The Project Work for students is divided into three stages where first year students have to work on Micro Project as a part of their course work, the second year students spend a part of their curriculum on Mini Project and then the final year students spend majority of time developing their Major Project. In this way, we ensure that practical learning is emphasised and integrated as a hands-on learning throughout their diploma.

Final year students also have to undergo one month of Winter Industrial Training as a part of their curriculum. They are attached with various industries such as Indo Danish Tool Room (IDTR), Jamshedpur, Core Future Knowledge Solutions, Kolkata, Indo German Tool Room (IGTR), Indore and other local industries in Sikkim as well as outside the state. The mandate of the industrial training is for students to get a detailed exposure to the working of industries as well as to learn latest technologies.

Second year students undergo one week of Industrial Visit to industries and they have visited industries in the past such as Renault Nissan Automotives India Private Limited, Chennai, Tata Motors, Jamshedpur and other reputed companies where they are exposed to the latest technologies offered in the various organizations.

Some of our ex-students have also become entrepreneurs, namely Mr Pema Wongyal Denzongpa of 2005 batch who has opened his own organization, Citi Computers in Mangan, North Sikkim. Another achievement is of our ex-student Mr Pukar Pandey, who had participated in Project Competition in NASA, North America and is now the proprietor of Sikkim Techno Solutions. Many of our ex-students of Mechatronics are working in good organizations in India as well as abroad. Additional achievements of our students include participation in project exhibitions in Inter-College events, quiz competition in IIT, Delhi, debate competitions, singing, painting and other extra curricular activities so that our students are given a well rounded and holistic approach towards all aspects other than technical training.
